003 #weather

Time for a fresh weekly update. Many thanks for the inputs this week, especially valued feedback on our draft concept and data literacy topics from Julius, David, JP and Ralph. Also a warm welcome to Timo who recently joined. Our last call was on a freezing Friday, just days prior to which we were all out in t-shirts. What weather data is that o'er yonder? Keep reading for a data visualisation.

While Yann and I are getting busy preparing for the upcoming June hackdays, where we will be running a science data wrangling workshop and a data ethics panel in Lausanne, we are also set to support the Atelier Open Data in Sierre this Friday. Get ready for incoming Q&A from teams crunching culture & tourism data! Details (including how to help) will be posted here.

YRS

As mentioned already, Young Rewired State, the phenomenal organisation running mentorship and code/data hacking events for youngsters in the U.K. (as I blogged a couple of years ago), has reached out over Twitter to invite School of Data:arts to participate in this year's YRS festival. We would need to (very quickly) organise a location in Switzerland, but besides that they would provide support and sponsorship. We are reaching out to teachers and schools about this idea. If you'd like to know more, please get in touch.

Last week our pitch for School of Data:arts as a social enterprise was accepted for stage 1 of the International Create Challenge 2015. We have until June 15 to set up a team of 2-3 people, submit a detailed plan, submit CVs and a video. Let us know if you think this is a good idea and wish to be part of the team.

Below you will see a visualisation made using real-time weather data of last weekend released on the pilot Swiss Open Government Data portal. At this point, it's not going to help us figure out why it was so cold on Friday, but I am happy to hear suggestions for how to relate/interact with the data.
